Star White or Night Sky

Apple's iPhone Duo comes in two finishes, Star White and Night Sky, at identical prices and in every storage tier. Here's what actually differs between them, what reviewers have said about smudges, and which one suits you.

Key facts

It's mostly taste. Both colors share the same titanium build, the same four storage tiers and the same $1,999 starting price (US, as of Oct 31, 2026), and no US shipping difference by color has been reported. Night Sky is the low-key, uniform look; Star White shows off the bright frame and, per one brief hands-on, seemed to show smudges less.

Pick the iPhone Duo color you like looking at. Apple sells Star White and Night Sky at the same prices, in the same four storage tiers and with the same titanium build, so the real differences are how the back, frame and camera area look and how readily each one shows smudges.

What actually differs between Star White and Night Sky

Apple lists the two finishes by name on its iPhone Duo spec page and in its launch announcement, but neither page describes either color beyond the name. For a closer description, you have to go to the outlets.

The MacRumors colors buyer’s guide describes Night Sky as a very dark blue, with a muted blue-gray back and glossy blue titanium edges, and compares it with Apple’s older Midnight finish. Because the back, camera plateau and frame sit close in tone, MacRumors calls Night Sky the sleeker, more uniform option.

Star White, per the same guide, is a soft, slightly warm white somewhere between Apple’s Silver and Starlight, set against a bright, silvery titanium frame and hinge. The light camera plateau makes the two dark lenses stand out.

Reviewers land in similar places. Tech Advisor’s review calls Night Sky a dark navy and Star White a pearly white, and says “Star White is more distinctive.” MacStories’ John Voorhees wrote in his first impressions that Night Sky looks like a deep slate close to black, with the blue showing more in bright sunlight.

What stays the same: build, storage and price

Apple doesn’t split materials by color. Its announcement says the iPhone Duo is crafted from grade 5 titanium “polished to a mirror finish,” with a 3D-printed hinge cover in a contrasting micro-blasted finish, and the spec page lists Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back for every model.

Every storage tier comes in both colors. Apple’s announcement offers star white and night sky in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB, and MacRumors lists the US prices as $1,999, $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199 (US list prices as of Oct 31, 2026). Storage, not color, is the decision that changes what you pay; the price by storage tier guide breaks that down.

The inside is the same story on paper. Apple lists the same nano-texture inner display for the iPhone Duo with no color variants, and Apple hasn’t said whether the border around the inner screen differs by finish. None of the reviews cited here mention it either.

Fingerprints and scratches: what reviewers report

The clearest comparison comes from Tom’s Guide. After a 30-minute hands-on in September, Jeff Parsons called Night Sky “a fingerprint magnet” and noticed smudges less on Star White. He also called it trivial, and a non-issue if you use a case.

Tech Advisor found that both screens attract fingerprints, which is a display issue rather than a color one, and reported no scratches or scuffs during its review period. Scratch visibility by color is a gap: Apple hasn’t said anything about it, and reviewers haven’t compared the two finishes. For the screens themselves, see how to clean the inner screen.

Does color change when you get one?

Not in the US, from what has been reported. MacRumors reported on Oct 16 that Apple’s US online store showed a Jan 25, 2027 ship date for all eight configurations, both colors in all four capacities. Macworld’s pre-order live blog likewise tracked estimates slipping across all colors and capacities together that day.

MacRumors also said walk-in stock was likely to be very tight, so check before you head out. The where to buy guide covers Apple, carriers and retailers.

With a case on, the color mostly matters less

Apple’s own cases come in their own colors: the iPhone Duo Case is $79 in sand or navy blue, and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is $129 in navy blue or taupe, according to Apple’s announcement (US list prices as of Oct 31, 2026). Either one will likely hide most of the back color, which is an inference from their opaque design rather than something Apple states.

MacRumors suggests thinking about your case plans before choosing, and leans toward Star White if you go caseless so the bright frame shows. If you want the color visible and some protection, one clear case is listed for iPhone Duo by its maker. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro is $49.99 in Crystal Clear and covers the hinge, but Spigen says it isn’t compatible with MagSafe accessories and it’s on preorder, shipping in 45 business days. Prices are as of Oct 31, 2026. More picks are in our best iPhone Duo cases roundup.

Who each color suits

Night Sky suits buyers who want a low-key phone that reads as one dark object, and who plan to use a case or don’t mind wiping off prints, given the Tom’s Guide observation. It’s also the pick of The National’s reviewer, who wished Apple had offered a bolder third option.

Star White suits buyers who want the polished titanium to stand out, plan to go caseless or clear, and would rather see fewer smudges. Apple shows both in its Apple Store launch photos, so seeing them side by side in a store is worth the trip if you can. Which one did you pick?
