How to set up a new iPhone Duo
Setting up an iPhone Duo follows Apple's usual iPhone flow, but the foldable is eSIM-only and uses Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID. Here are the steps in Apple's own wording, plus fixes if setup stalls.

Key facts
Turn on the iPhone Duo, hold your unlocked old iPhone nearby for Quick Start, then follow the prompts for Wi-Fi, eSIM, Touch ID, passcode, data transfer and your Apple Account. The Duo is eSIM-only, so confirm your carrier supports eSIM first. Once you're in, update to iOS 27.2 to get Apple Pencil (USB-C) support.
Setting up a new iPhone Duo follows the same flow Apple uses for every recent iPhone, with two differences that matter: the iPhone Duo is eSIM-only, and it uses Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID. Apple’s spec page lists a "fingerprint sensor built into the side button" and dual eSIM, and says the phone does not support a physical SIM.
The steps below follow the wording in Apple’s own support documents. Apple’s iPhone User Guide now has an iPhone Duo section covering its hardware.
Before you start
- Update your old iPhone. Apple says both devices should be on the latest iOS for Quick Start, and Quick Start works from an iPhone on iOS 11 or later (Apple).
- Back it up. Apple’s update guidance recommends an iCloud or computer backup before updating, and a backup is also one of the restore options during setup.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on. Apple says the old iPhone needs Wi-Fi with Bluetooth turned on, and the new one needs Wi-Fi or cellular.
- Check your carrier. Apple’s spec page notes that eSIM requires a carrier that supports eSIM and a wireless plan, so confirm with your carrier first.
- Your Apple Account password. Setup asks for it, and you may need a verification code sent to another device.
The only things in the box are the phone and a USB-C charge cable, per Apple’s spec page. More on that in what’s in the iPhone Duo box.
How to set up iPhone Duo, step by step
Follow the numbered steps below. Each one links to the Apple support document it is based on.
Touch ID on iPhone Duo: what to know
Apple’s general Touch ID document still describes sensors in the Home button and the iPad top button, not the iPhone Duo’s side button, so the spec page is the source for where it lives. The enrollment steps (rest, don’t press, adjust your grip) are the same.
Our suggestion, not Apple’s: enroll each finger you’ll press the side button with, folded and unfolded. You have five slots.
If it doesn’t work
Quick Start doesn’t appear
Check that the old iPhone is unlocked on its Home Screen with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on. If the setup prompt disappears from the old phone, Apple’s Quick Start document says to restart both devices. Still stuck? Tap Set Up Without Another Device and restore from your iCloud backup instead.
Your eSIM won’t transfer or activate
Apple’s eSIM troubleshooting document suggests turning Airplane Mode on and off, restarting, and checking for a carrier settings update in Settings > General > About. If none of that works, Apple says to contact your carrier, with the error message, your phone number, your carrier account PIN or password, and the phone’s IMEI or EID ready.
Touch ID won’t recognize your finger
Apple’s Touch ID troubleshooting document says to update iOS, clean and dry both your finger and the sensor, cover the sensor completely with your finger, and remove any case or screen protector covering it. Then check Touch ID & Passcode in Settings and enroll a different finger. If you see a message that Touch ID setup couldn’t complete, Apple points you to service. If a case is the problem, see our iPhone Duo case picks.
Apple Pencil won’t connect
Only Apple Pencil (USB-C) works with the iPhone Duo, and it needs iOS 27.2 or later, per Apple’s Pencil service document. Apple’s document says only Apple Pencil (USB-C) is compatible, so Apple Pencil Pro won’t work, as 9to5Mac also reported ahead of the release. Gadget Hacks reports that the Pencil pairs by plugging it into the iPhone Duo with a USB-C cable. If pairing fails, Apple’s document suggests charging the Pencil, removing any third-party accessories, turning on Airplane Mode for 15 seconds, then unpairing and pairing again.
Bottom line
Setting up an iPhone Duo is mostly the familiar iPhone routine. The steps most specific to the iPhone Duo are the eSIM handoff and Touch ID, so line up your carrier details before you start. We’ll link dedicated data transfer and eSIM guides here once they publish. Next up: productivity apps worth installing.

Steps
Turn it on and pick your language
Press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears, then the Hello screen, per Apple's setup document. Choose a text and icon size (Default, Medium or Large) and tap Continue, then choose whether to use your region's common languages for the keyboard and dictation.
Use Quick Start or set up manually
Unlock your old iPhone, go to its Home Screen and set the iPhone Duo next to it, and Quick Start should offer to set up the new phone, according to Apple's Quick Start document. No other Apple device? Tap Set Up Without Another Device.
Connect to Wi-Fi
Join a Wi-Fi network so the phone can activate. Apple says you can tap Continue Without Wi-Fi to use cellular instead when that option is offered.
Install the required iOS 27.1 update
MacRumors reported that the iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1 and requires a newer iOS 27.1 build during setup. MacRumors didn't say at which point in setup the update appears, so install it when setup asks.
Transfer or activate your eSIM
If setup asks to transfer your phone number, follow the onscreen prompts. Apple's eSIM setup document says eSIM Quick Transfer needs both phones signed in to the same Apple Account, the old iPhone unlocked, Bluetooth on and both phones nearby on iOS 18.4 or later. If your carrier assigned an eSIM when you bought the phone, Apple says to follow the onscreen steps; if your carrier gave you a QR code, tap Use QR code.
Set up Touch ID in the side button
Rest a finger on the side button without pressing until you feel a quick vibration, then shift your grip when prompted so the sensor reads the edges of your fingertip, per Apple's Touch ID document. You can enroll up to five fingerprints in total and add the rest later in Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Add a Fingerprint.
Create a passcode
Apple's default is a six-digit passcode. Tap Passcode Options if you want a four-digit or custom code instead.
Transfer your apps and data
With Quick Start, you can download from iCloud in the background and start using the phone right away, or transfer straight from the old iPhone and wait for it to finish. Keep both phones close together and plugged in until the transfer completes, Apple says. Setting up manually? Choose an iCloud backup, a computer backup or an Android transfer, or tap Don't Transfer Anything.
Sign in with your Apple Account
Enter your Apple Account email or phone number and password; you may need a verification code from your previous device. Then work through the prompts for automatic updates, Siri, Apple Pay, appearance and Screen Time.
Update to iOS 27.2 for Apple Pencil support
After setup, go to Settings > General > Software Update and tap Download and Install if iOS 27.2 is listed, with the phone on Wi-Fi and plugged in, per Apple's update document. iOS 27.2 arrived on Oct 26 with Apple Pencil (USB-C) support on both displays and Edge Light, according to 9to5Mac.
