iPhone Duo vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8

Apple's first foldable meets Samsung's new, lighter Galaxy Z Fold 8. US list prices as of Oct 30, 2026: the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at $1,899, both with a 7.6-inch inner display, but they differ on weight, water resistance, stylus support and repair costs.

Key facts

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is lighter (201 g vs 254 g), $100 cheaper at each shared storage tier (US list prices as of Oct 30, 2026), and Samsung's reported inner-screen repair price is lower. The iPhone Duo has IP68 vs IP48, Apple Pencil (USB-C) support, 25W Qi2 charging and a 2TB option. Neither has a dedicated telephoto, so iPhone owners will likely lean Duo and Android users Fold 8.

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a new, wider model from Samsung rather than the direct successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. On paper they're close: both have a 7.6-inch inner display, both start at 256GB, and as of Oct 30, 2026, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899 against $1,999 for the iPhone Duo. The differences that matter are weight, water resistance, cameras, the stylus, and which ecosystem you already live in.

Which Galaxy Z Fold 8?

One naming catch first. Samsung now sells two book-style models, and PC Guide reports the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, while the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 takes a wider form factor. GSMArena describes the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as the new, lighter model and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra as the true foldable flagship with all the extras. This guide compares the iPhone Duo with the plain Galaxy Z Fold 8, the model with the same 7.6-inch inner screen size.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has an 8.0-inch inner display, a 6.5-inch cover display, and a 10MP telephoto camera, according to Business Today. Keep it in mind if zoom matters to you.

The full spec table, further down this page, is built from Apple’s spec page, MacRumors, GSMArena, PC Guide, Tom’s Guide, TechRadar, Android Central and iFixit, all credited in the sources.

Displays and the crease

Both inner screens measure 7.6 inches, and the iPhone Duo has slightly more pixels at 1878 by 2670 versus 1828 by 2448 on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, per GSMArena. The iPhone Duo uses a nano-texture inner display, while TechRadar notes the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a glossier anti-glare coating.

Reviewers found neither crease is gone. In the Macworld review roundup, Wired called the iPhone Duo crease hardly visible, while PCMag said it still shows with the screen off and can be felt under a finger. GSMArena says the Galaxy Z Fold 8 crease is less visible than the Ultra's but still there, and Tom's Guide found it became more prominent over time.

More on that in our crease guide.

Weight and size

This is the Galaxy Z Fold 8's clearest win. It weighs 201 g against 254 g for the iPhone Duo, a 53 g gap, and it's thinner both closed (9.7 mm vs 11.3 mm) and open (4.5 mm vs 5.2 mm), per Tom’s Guide.

Reviewers split on whether the extra weight matters. In the Macworld roundup, 9to5Mac found the iPhone Duo comfortable in a pocket, while Gizmodo's reviewer said it made a front pocket sag.

Cameras

Neither phone has a dedicated telephoto lens. The iPhone Duo pairs a 48MP main camera with a 48MP ultrawide and offers a 2x option that Apple says is produced by the main sensor. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 uses a 50MP main and a 50MP ultrawide, and GSMArena says it cuts corners mainly on cameras compared with the Ultra.

Tom's Guide called the missing telephoto on the iPhone Duo a big deal for zoomed shots, though CNET and PCMag were positive about its everyday photos, per Macworld's roundup. For a telephoto in either camp, the options are the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra or a non-folding phone like the iPhone 18 Pro Max (see iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max).

Software and apps

The iPhone Duo runs iOS, and app support on the big screen is still catching up. Tom's Guide and Wired both saw unoptimized apps with thick black bars on the sides, and Wired noted developers need to target the iOS 27.1 SDK, per Macworld’s roundup.

Android's large-screen app story is older but not perfect. Android Central’s review found scaling inconsistent on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, with games the main problem.

On long-term support, GSMArena lists up to seven major Android upgrades for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Apple hasn't said how many years of iOS updates the iPhone Duo will get.

Already deep in iMessage, iCloud and an Apple Watch? That likely decides this before specs do. More on the iPhone Duo's apps in our productivity apps guide.

Stylus

The iPhone Duo supports Apple Pencil (USB-C), though Apple’s spec page says hover isn't supported. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 doesn't support any S Pen, per TechRadar. If handwriting or sketching is part of the plan, that's a clean split.

Durability and repairs

The iPhone Duo has the stronger water and dust rating on paper: IP68, rated to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, per Apple. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is rated IP48, and iFixit points out that rating doesn't cover dust.

iFixit gave the iPhone Duo 5/10, its best score yet for a foldable, praising easy battery removal while calling inner-screen and hinge repairs a lot of work, per TechRadar. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 got a provisional 4/10; iFixit notes Samsung has previously treated the hinge and inner display as one replacement assembly, and after a dust test the hinge ground and stopped opening normally.

Repair prices favor Samsung. As of Oct 30, 2026, Apple charges $999 for an iPhone Duo inner display repair without AppleCare+, or $99 with it, MacRumors reports. Notebookcheck reports Samsung's US price for a Galaxy Z Fold 8 inner screen is $579, citing Samsung's cracked-screen repair page. Notebookcheck doesn’t say whether that price assumes any Samsung coverage, so treat the gap as approximate.

Apple also acknowledged on Oct 26 that a small number of iPhone Duo units have an inner-display issue and is offering replacements through AppleCare, per iClarified. Apple hasn't said how many units are affected. If you're weighing protection, see whether AppleCare+ is worth it.

Price

At US list prices as of Oct 30, 2026, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 costs $100 less at every shared tier: $1,899, $2,099 and $2,499 for 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, per PC Guide, against $1,999, $2,199 and $2,599 for the iPhone Duo. Only the iPhone Duo offers 2TB, at $3,199. Samsung pricing at retailers moves around, so check current deals; our storage tier guide breaks down the Duo side.

Which should you buy?

Neither is better across the board, so it comes down to who you are. Apple's first foldable brings a stronger IP rating, Apple Pencil support and 25W Qi2 charging. Samsung's brings a lighter, thinner body, lower prices and cheaper screen repairs.

If you're already on iPhone, the iPhone Duo is the natural pick, as long as you can live with letterboxed apps for now. If you're on Android, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 avoids a platform switch. Want a telephoto? Look at the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Want a stylus? The iPhone Duo. Want the lightest? The Galaxy Z Fold 8. On a budget, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts $100 lower. Still deciding?
