iPhone Duo vs iPad mini: one device or two?

Apple's new iPad mini, announced Oct 26, has an 8.5-inch OLED screen and the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone Duo, starting at $699 as of Oct 31, 2026. Here's how the $1,999 Duo compares on screen, Pencil, apps and the cost of simply buying both.

Key facts

An iPhone 18 Pro plus a 256GB iPad mini costs $1,998 at Apple as of Oct 31, 2026, one dollar less than a 256GB iPhone Duo. The iPad mini has the larger 8.5-inch screen and supports Apple Pencil Pro, while the Duo's 7.6-inch display works only with Apple Pencil (USB-C), without hover. Pick the Duo if carrying one 254 g device matters more than the better tablet.

Apple announced a new iPad mini on Oct 26 with an 8.5-inch OLED display and the A20 Pro chip, starting at $699 and arriving Nov 6, according to MacRumors' pricing report. That puts it right next to the iPhone Duo, whose 7.6-inch folding screen is Apple's pitch for a phone that opens into a small tablet. So: one $1,999 device, or an iPhone plus an iPad mini?

The iPad mini has the bigger, flatter screen

Apple lists the iPad mini's display as an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED at 2316 by 1512 pixels and 326 ppi, per Apple's iPad mini tech specs. The iPhone Duo's inner display is 7.6 inches at 1878 by 2670 pixels and 430 ppi, with ProMotion up to 120Hz, per Apple's iPhone Duo specs.

Shape matters as much as size. Working from Apple's pixel counts, the iPad mini is roughly 1.53:1 and the Duo's inner panel roughly 1.42:1, so the Duo is closer to square. MacRumors notes that the Duo's inner and outer displays share a 1:1.4 aspect ratio.

The iPad mini's panel is flat; the Duo's folds. Reviewers split on the crease: Wired found it barely noticeable, while PCMag said it is still visible with the screen off, per Macworld's review roundup. More on that in the iPhone Duo crease explainer.

The Duo's inner display has a nano-texture finish as standard, per Apple's specs. On the iPad mini, nano-texture is a $100 option offered only on 256GB and 512GB models, MacRumors reports. Apple's iPad mini specs don't mention ProMotion, which MacTrast reads as no 120Hz.

One pocket, or a pocket and a bag

Apple lists the iPhone Duo at 254 g, 117.8 by 84.1 mm closed, and 11.3 mm thick. The iPad mini measures 195.3 by 132.6 mm and 5.4 mm thick, at 255 g for Wi-Fi and 263 g for cellular. So the Duo weighs about the same as an iPad mini but folds to phone width.

An iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 g, per Apple's iPhone 18 Pro specs, so it plus a Wi-Fi iPad mini comes to 466 g.

9to5Mac's size comparison, made in September against the previous 8.3-inch iPad mini, found the Duo's thin bezels narrow the screen gap. Pocket verdicts vary: 9to5Mac's reviewer found the Duo comfortable to carry, while Gizmodo's needed a belt to keep a front pocket from sagging, per Macworld's roundup. Full measurements are in size and weight compared.

Apple Pencil is where the iPad mini pulls ahead

The iPad mini works with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), both with hover, per Apple's Pencil store page, which lists them at $129 and $79 as of Oct 31, 2026. The iPhone Duo supports only Apple Pencil (USB-C), on both displays, since iOS 27.2 arrived Oct 26, 9to5Mac reports.

Apple's footnote says hover is not supported with Apple Pencil (USB-C) on iPhone Duo. Apple's Apple Pencil page also lists pressure sensitivity for Apple Pencil Pro but not for Apple Pencil (USB-C), so the Duo has no pressure-sensitive Pencil option. iThinkDifferent reported, without naming a source, that Pencil Pro's charging mount couldn't fit the fold mechanism; Apple hasn't given a reason.

iPad apps versus iPhone apps

The iPad mini runs iPadOS, while the Duo runs iOS, and apps built only for iPad still need an iPad, iClarified points out. Apps that haven't been updated for the Duo can show as phone-sized windows with black bars: Tom's Guide and Wired both flagged this, per Macworld's roundup.

Multitasking is simpler too. The Duo's Split View locks two apps at exactly half the inner screen each, and the divider can't be dragged, iThinkDifferent found. iPad users have been able to resize Split View since iOS 9 in 2015, MacRumors notes.

Craig Federighi told Marques Brownlee that for iPad mini owners, the Duo "can often fill that space for them," per iThinkDifferent.

The cost math: two devices cost about the same as one Duo

All prices are Apple's US online store prices as of Oct 31, 2026. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB, per Apple's iPhone Duo store page.

  • iPhone 18 Pro 256GB ($1,199) + iPad mini 256GB Wi-Fi ($799) = $1,998, or $1 less than the Duo with 256GB on both.
  • iPhone 18 Pro 256GB ($1,199) + iPad mini 128GB Wi-Fi ($699) = $1,898, or $101 less.
  • iPhone 17 256GB unlocked ($929) + iPad mini 128GB Wi-Fi ($699) = $1,628, or $371 less.
  • iPhone 18 Pro 256GB ($1,199) + iPad mini 256GB Wi-Fi with nano-texture ($899) = $2,098, or $99 more.

Cellular flips the math. The iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular costs $150 more, at $849 for 128GB or $949 for 256GB, so iPhone 18 Pro plus a 256GB cellular mini is $2,148, or $149 more than the Duo. The iPad mini isn't a phone, iClarified notes, so that means a second data line priced by your carrier. One Apple Pencil (USB-C) at $79 works with either setup.

Who should buy which

Commuter reader: the iPhone Duo. One 254 g device with a nano-texture inner screen covers train reading with nothing extra in your bag, if letterboxed apps don't bother you.

Artist or note-taker: the iPad mini. Pencil Pro, pressure sensitivity, hover and a larger flat screen make it the better drawing tool on paper.

Budget buyer: two devices. An iPhone 17 plus a base iPad mini is $1,628 as of Oct 31, 2026, and if your current iPhone is fine, the iPad mini alone is $699.

Already own an iPad: keep it. The Duo's value depends on replacing the tablet, and an iPhone 18 Pro is $800 less than a Duo. We think the Duo makes sense here only if you truly want to stop carrying the iPad.

Verdict

The iPad mini is the better tablet and an iPhone plus iPad mini costs about the same as a Duo; the iPhone Duo wins only if carrying one device matters most.

Pros

  • One 254 g device replaces a phone and a small tablet
  • Nano-texture inner display is standard
  • Works as a 5G phone, so no second data line

Cons

  • 7.6-inch screen is smaller than the iPad mini's 8.5 inches
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C) only, with no hover or pressure sensitivity
  • Runs iOS apps, not iPadOS apps, with a fixed 50/50 Split View

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone Duo's screen bigger than the iPad mini's?
No. The iPhone Duo's inner display is 7.6 inches, and the new iPad mini's is 8.5 inches, according to Apple's specs. The Duo's screen is also closer to square.
Does Apple Pencil Pro work with iPhone Duo?
No. Apple lists only Apple Pencil (USB-C) as compatible with iPhone Duo, and says hover is not supported. The iPad mini works with both Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C).
Is an iPhone plus an iPad mini cheaper than an iPhone Duo?
Barely, at matched storage. As of Oct 31, 2026, an iPhone 18 Pro 256GB ($1,199) plus an iPad mini 256GB Wi-Fi ($799) is $1,998, against $1,999 for a 256GB iPhone Duo at Apple.
