iPhone Duo 256GB vs 512GB: which storage should you buy?
The iPhone Duo costs $1,999 with 256GB and $2,199 with 512GB in the US (as of Oct 30, 2026). For most buyers, 256GB plus an iCloud+ plan is the better deal, but heavy 4K video shooters and offline-library hoarders should step up.

Key facts
As of Oct 30, 2026, most buyers should get the 256GB iPhone Duo ($1,999) and pay $2.99 a month for 200GB of iCloud+ if they need room for photos. The 512GB model ($2,199) is for people who shoot lots of high-frame-rate 4K video, keep big offline libraries, or won't pay for iCloud+.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 with 256GB, and the 512GB model costs $2,199 in the US (as of Oct 30, 2026), according to MacRumors' pricing report. For most buyers, 256GB is enough, and the $200 difference is better spent elsewhere.
The exceptions are people who record a lot of high-frame-rate 4K video and keep it on the phone, and people who want large offline libraries without paying for iCloud+. Here's how the math works.
What 256GB actually gives you
Apple's iPhone Duo spec page lists four capacities: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Apple's footnote says available space is less than the label, and that a standard configuration uses about 12GB to 24GB.
Based on that footnote, our calculation puts free space on a fresh 256GB model at roughly 232GB to 244GB, before you install a single app. Apple's footnote adds that Apple Intelligence on-device models use about 7GB, and that space can be freed by turning Apple Intelligence off. That's still a lot of room for apps, messages and a photo library that lives mostly in iCloud.
The usual reason to buy more storage mostly doesn't apply
On iPhone Pro models, ProRes video is the classic storage hog. Apple's ProRes support document says ProRes files are "up to 30 times larger than HEVC files," and it ties several ProRes recording modes to 256GB or more of storage.
The iPhone Duo appears to sidestep that, because it appears not to record ProRes at all. Apple's iPhone Duo spec page doesn't list ProRes or Apple Log, and Apple's ProRes support document doesn't name the iPhone Duo among the models that record it. SlashGear reports that the iPhone Duo records in HEVC and H.264 only, and MacRumors lists ProRes RAW among the iPhone 18 Pro features the iPhone Duo lacks. Apple's spec page doesn't mention ProRes support, and we found no Apple statement about adding it later.
That doesn't make video free. Apple's spec page lists 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120 fps on the Fusion Main camera, and Cinematic mode at up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps. Apple doesn't publish per-minute file sizes for the iPhone Duo on that page, so this guide won't guess at them. It's reasonable to expect long 4K clips at high frame rates to eat space quickly, and that's the clearest case for 512GB.
The $200 step vs. iCloud+
In the US, as of Oct 30, 2026, iCloud+ costs $0.99 a month for 50GB, $2.99 for 200GB, $9.99 for 2TB, $29.99 for 6TB and $59.99 for 12TB, according to Apple's iCloud+ pricing document. Apple notes that some states add tax.
Here's how the two most relevant plans stack up against the $200 jump from 256GB to 512GB. This is our calculation, using Apple's US prices before tax.
| iCloud+ plan | Monthly | 2 years | 3 years | Months to reach $200 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200GB | $2.99 | $71.76 | $107.64 | About 67 |
| 2TB | $9.99 | $239.76 | $359.64 | About 21 |
The 200GB plan takes more than five years to cost as much as the storage upgrade. The 2TB plan passes $200 in about 21 months, but it also holds four times as much as a 512GB phone.
The catch is that cloud storage isn't the same as storage on the phone. Apple's photo storage guide says Optimize iPhone Storage is on by default for iCloud Photos, keeping full-resolution originals in iCloud and smaller copies on the device. That works well for a big photo library. It does nothing for downloaded movies, music or files you want offline on a flight, since those have to sit on the phone. Apple also says new iCloud accounts include only 5GB free, so the no-subscription route really is a 256GB-only route.
Who should pay for 512GB
Buy 512GB if you shoot long 4K video at 60 or 120 fps and keep it on the phone instead of offloading it. It also makes sense if you keep large offline libraries of video, music or maps, if you won't pay a monthly iCloud+ fee, or if you plan to keep the iPhone Duo for many years.
There's a price-ladder argument, too. MacRumors lists the 1TB model at $2,599 (US, as of Oct 30, 2026), a $400 step up from 512GB, so 512GB is the cheapest way to double your room. More on the full ladder in our iPhone Duo price by storage tier guide.
Who 256GB isn't for
256GB isn't for someone who treats the iPhone Duo as their main video camera and refuses a cloud subscription. Apple sells the iPhone Duo only in fixed capacities, so choose with a few years of use in mind rather than your current library.
Bottom line
For most people, a 256GB iPhone Duo plus the 200GB iCloud+ plan is the cheaper path. We think the $200 is better saved toward a case or protection plan, which you can weigh in our AppleCare+ guide. Still deciding on the phone itself? Start with should you buy an iPhone Duo, or compare it with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Max spec page lists with ProRes, ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2 recording.
